design studio THREE.
project ONE.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
1. Identify and explain different spatial types in architecture, and how they inform spatial use and experience
2. Identify and analyze case studies to inform the design project
3. Create tectonic expressions of different spatial typologies which impact on the uses and experiential conditions of space
4. Generate design through conscious consideration of section-plan relationship with considerations of human scale, natural light, materiality and textures
5. Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas.
the tragic lost of many young lives in the korean sewol ferry incident and the sudden disappearance of flight MH370 have shown us how fragile life is.
in this project, we were required to design a memorial for each incident.
![]() DEVELOPMENT MODEL. | ![]() PRESENTATION DAY. | ![]() PRECEDENT STUDIES.we studied the national assembly of dhaka which is designed by LOUIS I KHAN. this building is built using concrete, surrounded by water. the reflection of the building on the water added a hint of life to the massive structure. this building is in pure geometry forms, which are the basis of all shapes. |
---|---|---|
![]() PRESENTATION BOARD.our memorial is located 15m away from the shore. the shape of the memorial is a perfect sphere. when you enter, you will lose all sense of directions. this is similar to the sinking of the ferry. out of panic, victims would be lost and confused. they would not know which direction should they escape to. this memorial is suspended. this is a metaphor for the fragility of life. if any one of the cables was cut off, the memorial would lose its balance and fall off. | ![]() 3D MODEL.2 metal poles intersected into the building. this shows the sudden changes in event which took place. similar to the sinking of the ship, mishaps can never be predicted. the slit in the middle portrays 2 different elements coming together as one. after the incident, people from all places offered their help and condolences. this sphere is made of precast concrete. measuring at 8m diameter, this massive sphere diminishes the ego of the visitors. | ![]() SEWOL SPHERE.this memorial is enriched with the 4 senses. touch-as visitors approach the memorial through a boat, they could gentle stroke the calm current of the sea. see-from an enclosed space inside the memorial to an endless boundary of the sea, this creates an interesting view to the visitors. smell-the smell of the sea breeze is calming and soothing hear-echoes of footsteps to the voices of the visitors could be heard. once exit the memorial, the ears would be freed of the echoes. |
![]() SLIT.the slit is facing east-west direction. as sun rises and sets, light illuminated from the slit is a metaphor for the flicker of hope both victims and their loved ones had for their escape. | ![]() SLIT.during night time, light would illuminate from inside to the outside. in the middle of dark sea, this light provides an interesting sense of experience to people on shore. this draws their attention to visit the memorial too. | ![]() SECTION 1.the entrance is from below. as visitors approached the memorial, they would climb into the memorial, a stairways would lead them to the platform as shown. the metal poles are the only pathways to reach the top of the memorial. however, one of them has no steps on it. this is a metaphor for the incident which took place. those who obeyed the captain's orders could not escape and died. while those who had the courage to follow their instincts survived. |
![]() SECTION 2.the steps lead visitors to the top of the sphere, where they could enjoy the scenic view of the sea. |
![]() PRECENDENT STUDIES.for the MH 370 memorial, we did a precedent studies on the CHURCH OF SACRED HEART. the linear plan of the church is adapted into our memorial. | ![]() PRESENTATION BOARD MH370. | ![]() WRECKED.these wrecked trusses represents the wreckage of the plane. |
---|---|---|
![]() DOUBLE PATHWAY.the double pathway represents the choices made by the passengers. passengers who made choices to not board the plane in the end is represented by the pathway above. they have chosen the right choice, hence the journey is easy. however, those who boarded the plane, were put through hardships. these are represented by the uneven bumps created on the ground surface. this is represented through the pathway below. | ![]() ENTRANCE.as visitors leave the memorial, they can either opt to experience the different pathway or the leave the memorial. | ![]() STAIRWAY. |
![]() DOWNFALL.the sudden drop at the end of the memorial portrays the sudden disappearance of the plane MH 370. when visitors are at this sections, they will no longer be visible to people who are at ground level. also, the sudden drop evokes a frightful experience, similar to those on board. | ![]() TOP VIEW. | ![]() DEVELOPMENT MODEL. |
