shape GRAMMAR.
project TWO.
Project 2 – Shape Grammar of Taylor’s Kayak & Club House
Learning Outcomes of this Project
1) Produce new designs using shape grammar method from the student’s own set of rules.
Objectives of Project
1) To encourage students to observe natural or man-made element and identify underlying design principles that formed them
2) To allow students to create and explore new designs using the same or modified design principles through shape grammar method
This project requires students to design the Taylor’s University Kayak and Club House. The building can be placed anywhere around the lake but preferably near the play courts. Since shape grammar only concerns with the creation of building forms therefore students are not required to conduct a site analysis for this project.
The site context and images are only required to be superimposed in the 3D images of the final design.
The minimum space requirements for the building that students need to produce are as follows:
i) Lobby and lounge
ii) Office spaces
iii) 2 changing rooms including toilets & showers
iv) Kayak and equipment storage space
v) Storage space for sports equipment
vi) Indoor game area
vii) 1 café
viii) 1 kitchen
ix) Decks or platforms
x) Other supporting spaces

![]() From the rules created, I have come up with 7 different designs based on the rules. The most suitable design is chosen and the floor plans are creatively planned. | ![]() The final design of the selected model. The kayak house features a deck which extends to the lake, which allows users to transport the kayak to and from the lake easily. The designs features large overhangs which is especially suited for Malaysia's hot and humid climate. Also, this building features a wind chimney which could trap and direct prevailing wind into the interior. |
