Project 1 - Shape Grammar Inspired by Surrounding

 

Learning Outcomes of this Project 1

1) To Identify and describe the process to analyse existing designs using shape grammar method. 

 

Objectives of Project 1

1) To encourage students to observe natural or man-made element and identify underlying design principles that formed them

2) To allow students to create and explore new designs using the same or modified design principles through shape grammar method 

 

Each group is required to find a natural or man-made element from actual observations, books or internet which we believe having certain underlying design principles or rules.

 

The group should analyse and explain the underlying design principles in terms of shapes and forms, i.e.: prediction of how the forms or shapes in the chosen element were formed and translate them into shape rules.

Aeonium tabuliforme

Aeonium tabuliforme

The plant chosen to be analysed is Aeonium Tabuliforme. This plant is a leafy plant and the sizes of the leaves are observed to be increasing in scale as they grow outwards.

The board above illustrates the rules analysed and applied in the designing process.

This board explains how the final form of the facade design is made.
