Learning Outcomes of this Project

 

1. Identify and collect relevant research data.

2. Explain a set of architectural and structural documentation.

3. Relate basic structural elements and structural principles in construction.

4. Analyse and document construction methods and materials.

5. Critique issues pertaining to energy efficiency, embodied energy as well as ecological impact.

 

This is a group assignment which predominantly relates to the topics of Industrialised Building System (IBS) as well as the materials’ embodied energy. Before embarking on this project we were be exposed with different types and methods of the IBS system and the calculation of embodied energy of different building materials in the classroom.

 

This project consists of two parts. In the first part, each group is required to conduct their own study on a building which was constructed using IBS to understand the components better. In the second part, the group has to construct a model of a 3-storey apartment building to imitate the actual IBS construction process and to record all the process in a video.

 

The building we have chosen as our precedent studies is IKEA, Damasara. This building was constructed using IBS building construction, and it has served as a good guidance for us to better understand IBS construction system.
